-Ing- Participle phrase   یک عبارت است که فاعل جمله را وصف می کند.در اکثر جمله ها این عبارت وصفی در ابتدای جمله قرار می گیرد و در برخی جملات در انتهای جمله قرار می گیرد.مثال:

1)  Walking along the street ,( I )met a friend whom I had not seen for along time.

2)  Having finished all her homework,( she) sat down to watch television.

3)  Having worked hard all his life,( he )decided to take a long vacation.

   nاین عبارات وصفی نشاندهنده ی (زمان time ) ویا (علت cause) می باشند و به همین دلیل برای ترجمه ی آنها به شیوه ی زیر عمل می کنیم:

       به شکل ‍”Ing” کلماتی نظیر «چونکه» ، « در حالیکه » ، « همانطور که » ،« بعد از اینکه » ، « اگر » ، « موقعی که »

       اضافه می کنیم و جمله را ترجمه می کنیم.

عبارات وصفی در ابتدای جمله های 1 و 2 بالا نشان دهنده ی زمان و در ابتدای جمله ی 3 نشان دهنده ی علت می باشد.

1.    Knowing the answer to the teacher’s question, John raised his hand.

1- چونکه جان جواب ِ سؤال معلم را می دانست ، دستش را بالا برد.

2.    Addressing a large gathering , the leader offered many guidelines.

      2-رهبر در حالیکه اجتماع انبوهی را خطاب می کرد رهنمودهای زیادی را ارائه فرمود.

   و یا : رهبر که اجتماع انبوهی را خطاب می کرد رهنمودهای زیادی را ارائه فرمود.

3.    Having taken off his shoes, Albert entered the room.

       3- آلبرت بعد از اینکه کفشهایش را بیرون آورد وارد اتاق شد.

4.    Realising he had been very rude to the teacher, he apologised.

      4  - او وقتی که متوجه شد نسبت به معلم خود گستاخی کرده است معذرت خواهی کرد.

5.    Watching TV, she did her homework.

       5- در حالی که تلویزیون نگاه می کرد تکلیفش را انجام می داد.

 1.     Opening up her jewelry box, she found her diamond rings gone.

2.     Believing he was atotal failure in everything he did, the man was on the point of siicide.

3.     Driving along an almost deserted country road, they ran out of gas.

4.     Not caring to accept welfare asistance, they often went without food.

5.     Depressed by the news she had received , she took a tranquilizer to quiet her nerves.

6.     Respecting her parent’s wishes, she always came home before midnight.

7.     Arriving home late at night , they found that the house had been broken into.

8.     Casting last looks at his beloved , the draftee sadly boarded the train.

9.     Having played tennis every day , he soon became an expert layer.

10. Backing out of his garage , he hit a dog.

11. Striking the keys too hard, he broke two of the strings.

12. Trying to play jazz on the piano, he damaged it.

13. Drinking water, I felt better.

14. Finding the man in need of help , he helped him.

15. Studying hard, you can succeed.
